Standard Short Courses on Offer
Mode of Delivery
A series of
short courses based on our full-time training programme are offered to industry. Delivery
of training is mainly via staff from industry attending classes / practicals with
full-time students at specified times during the day. This minimizes interruption of
full-time work programmes for industry staff. This is an ideal mode for professional
development of staff who do not necessarily qualify for, or who do not wish to complete, a
full tertiary qualification. Training can also be scheduled for evenings or Saturdays
depending on a minimum of 10 candidates registering for such courses. In some instances,
where it is warranted, special rates can be negotiated for training to take place on-site.
Research and Training
Facilities
The
department houses a Food Processing Plant, spacious microbiology laboratory, student
computer room, an analytical laboratory as well as a dedicated research laboratory. Other
departments in the Science faculty also provide additional services and equipment.
Access and Accreditation
Entrance to
these short courses is restricted to persons employed in the food industry. Registration
will require acknowledgement from the employer of the fact that a staff member will be
attending the course. All the short courses form part of SAQA-accredited courses in the
full-time programme and are hence recognized and fully quality assured via our internal
Quality Programme as well as by the HEQC (or its delegated bodies). Successful completion
of these short courses does not imply automatic accreditation for the full-time programme
in which it is housed, but could be used for RPL purposes.
